He was awarded his PhD in 1991 in the field of computer security, for a PhD thesis which analysed the DES encryption algorithm and then presented the design of the LOKI89 private-key block cipher. This was subsequently modified into LOKI91, a private key block cipher with 64-bit data and 64-bit keys, which can be used as a replacement for the DES.
His current research interests include the design and analysis of the new LOKI97 block cipher, and the development of the Safe Erlang mobile code system. Both projects were started during his 1997 & 2002 sabbaticals. He is also investigating Trust Issues in eCommerce.
