Anthea McCarthy-Jones

Senior Lecturer

Dr Anthea McCarthy-Jones is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business at UNSW, Canberra.

I have a PhD in International Relations with a specialization in Latin America. I have published work on politics and policymaking in developing nations, Australia’s neo-jihadist terror network, illicit business, and linkages between organized crime groups in Latin America, Asia and Australia.

My research has featured in publications by a range of organizations including East Asia Forum, InSight Crime, The Conversation, the Australian Institute of International Affairs, ABC News, Radio National, SBS News and the Sydney Morning Herald.

My current research focusses on developing a greater understanding of how 'dark networks' operate to facilitate illicit business activities in a global context.  In particular, my research examines the role of ‘brokers’ and 'enablers' and their importance to the organizational and operational structures of illicit networks.

In addition to my academic work, I am also a board member of the Australian Institute of Professional Intelligence Officers (AIPIO) and the Managing Editor of the AIPIO Journal.
