Core Systems Engineering

The Core Systems Engineering (SE) course aims to provides attendees with a practical understanding of the concept and application of SE across a variety of industries. An understanding of the associated products, processes, tools and management practices underpinning the multidisciplinary approach of SE will also be provided to enable participants to maximise the capability realisation of a system’s full life cycle. The introductory course places systems engineering principles in the context of the other related disciplines involved in the delivery of technical projects and the system life cycle. The Core SE Course includes many design exercises that illustrate the application of SE processes in various contexts to be ready for the systems of the future.  The exercises allow the opportunity to practice, use and discuss systems engineering, focusing on the early concept definition and acquisition portion of the systems life cycle. The two-day Core SE Course is also the first part of a three-day Advanced SE Course. The latter allows attendees to reinforce the material already covered and gain further knowledge for all of the stages of the system life cycle. No prior knowledge is assumed for the Core Course.

Duration: 2 Days

Delivery Mode: Face-to face and remote.  You choose how you would like to attend.

Course Information

The Courses applies the latest International Council on Systems Engineering, SE Body of Knowledge and International Test and Evaluation Association approaches and practices to describe the functions, roles, design and use of systems, including:

  • Key definitions and concepts in SE and their importance in realising capable systems;

  • The rationale of taking an SE approach in realising capable systems;

  • The importance of requirement definition and how to decompose system specifications from a user’s concepts, mission, needs and objectives;

  • The system lifecycle, with an emphasis on SE’s impact during the acquisition phase of a system; and

  • The role of Verification and Validation (V&V) throughout the system lifecycle, including various V&V methods and their costs and benefits

Courses will be held subject to sufficient registrations. UNSW Canberra reserves the right to cancel a course up to five working days prior to commencement of the course.
