UNSW Canberra is hosting Barbara Hanrahan: Words + Art exhibition bringing together the prints and prose of Australian artist and novelist Barbara Hanrahan. Assembling pieces held in UNSW Canberra's library, the UNSW Art Collection, and local private collections, this exhibition presents Barbara Hanrahan's prints alongside her unique imaginative fiction, displaying the fertile relationship between her visual and textual languages.
The internationally recognised Australian artist Barbara Hanrahan mastered a spectrum of printmaking methods; from etching to lithograph to woodcut. From March to June 2016, UNSW Canberra displays a selection of twenty-nine Hanrahan works, including the memorable Twelve Linocuts: A Suite of Prints, which is permanently on show in UNSW Canberra's library.
As well as a printmaker, Hanrahan was a prolific writer. The exhibition features a display of Hanrahan's novels and prose works alongside her prints, evoking the intimate, interesting and fruitful relationship between the art image and the printed word.
Themes of sexuality, gender, family, nature and popular culture bleed from Hanrahan's strong lines, sharp contrasts, fantastic settings, and childlike figures, eliciting a sense of primitive complexity within her animated compositions. The mysterious oedipal intensity is barely contained beneath the seemingly innocent figures drawn from images of the family and of nature.
The exhibition at UNSW Canberra manifests the "mysterious and contradictory" elements within Hanrahan's written and visual media at the same time celebrating the life and work of one of Australia's most recognised printmakers.
Official Opening is on Thursday 10 March 2016 at 5.30pm at UNSW Canberra Academy Library, Bld 13, ADFA, Northcott Drive, Campbell. Anyone can attend the opening.
