This Asia Pacific Development and Security theme examines how significant social changes such as urbanisation, climate change and natural disasters have affected community resilience, food security, refugees, governance and social policy. Key projects are outlined below.  

Rural Livelihoods and Social Businesses for Sustainable Development

Under this ongoing project, Minako Sakai, Ajie Saksono (UNSW PhD student) and Hadi Noori (UNSW PhD student) seek to examine emergent diverse forms of rural livelihoods to identify appropriate policies and emergent business partnerships to support equitable development and sustainable development.  This research project is in collaboration with Dr Falik Isbah at Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia. 

Understanding the Impacts of COVID-19 on Indonesia’s Construction Workers

Under this project, researchers at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences will undertake an initial scoping study of how COVID-19 has socially and economically impacted Indonesia’s construction sector and its workers. This project is funded by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and conducted in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works and Housing.

State of Knowledge on Illegal Wildlife Trade Networks in the ASEAN Region

Under this one-year project, Pichamon Yeophantong is leading a research that aims to understand how illegal wildlife trade networks evolve and operate in mainland Southeast Asia and what the implications are for law enforcement and sustainable development in the region. It is funded by the Australia-ASEAN Council and conducted in collaboration with the Overseas Development Institute and University College London.
