In contrast to most Australian managers’ belief, Business Excellence (BE) is not a generic concept like customer satisfaction or business improvement. It has its own tools for assessment and specific methods and models for implementation. BE models are capable of quantifying the excellence of organisations regardless of their size and industrial sector.

In more than six decades since its birth, BE has achieved glorious results. BE has been supported and recommended by several long-standing corporations, such as Nestle, KLM, BMW, TNT, Electrolux, Philips, Daimler-Chrysler, Siemens, Bosch, etc. BE has also been identified as the motivating force for Japanese post-war industries. Most importantly, several authors have found that companies that implement a BE model, outperform other companies.

By the end of this course, through seven highly engaging workshops, participants will be able to demonstrate the importance of the Business Excellence and explain its fundamental concepts and criteria defined by the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). Participants will also have a good understanding of the steps involved in implementing Business Excellence self-assessments and improvement programs.

  1. Where does the Business Excellence originate from, and how has it evolved since its birth?
  2. What are the major Business Excellence models and what are their differences?
  3. What are the fundamental concepts for the EFQM Business Excellence Model?
  4. What are the criteria and sub-criteria for the EFQM Business Excellence Model?
  5. What is the scoring logic for the EFQM Business Excellence Model?
  6. What are the required steps for a successful business excellence self-assessment and improvement?
  7. What are the existing Business Excellence self-assessment methods and how can we recognise the most suitable method for a certain firm?


Dr Ali Khosravi

Dr Ali Khosravi is a Senior Consultant at Excellencers Co. He has completed his PhD at Macquarie University, Sydney and has led more than 30 Business Improvement projects within a range of industries including health, education, telecommunication, construction, water and sewerage, power generation and distribution, food, automotive, oil drilling, and a two-billion-dollar oil refinery and petrochemical complex project where he was in charge of the whole feasibility study. His main fields of expertise include Business Excellence and Business Process / Performance Management. He has published articles in international journals such as Business Process Management Journal and Total Quality Management and Business Excellence Journal.


Dr Alireza Abbasi

Dr Alireza Abbasi is Director of Postgraduate Studies and Coordinator of Project Management programs in the University of New South Wales (UNSW) at Canberra. He obtained his PhD in Project Management from the University of Sydney in 2012 before joining the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) at UNSW Canberra. He also holds a graduate certificate in University Learning and Teaching from UNSW Sydney. His research and teaching interests include project management, management science, information systems management and network science. He has written a book, three book chapters and over 60 technical journal and conference papers.  Dr Abbasi has had several appointments and been involved in different projects in IT/Software, Oil, Education and R&D sectors. He is an active member of several professional bodies including Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM), Project Management Institute (PMI), and Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM).

Business Excellence history and models

Definition of Business Excellence followed by a brief presentation on its history over the past seven decades and evolution of BE models throughout the world. This section includes a workshop to show the meaning of BE and why it matters.

EFQM Model’s fundamental concepts, criteria and sub-criteria

Every BE model has a set of criteria and sub-criteria and a scoring logic that enables quantifying the level of excellence in every firm from different angels regardless of its size, products or services and industry. Presenting these is followed by two workshops to practice the criteria and points to address for each.

RADAR scoring logic

RADAR logic is at the heart of the EFQM Business Excellence Model. It is a dynamic assessment framework and powerful management tool that provides the backbone to support an organization in addressing its challenges and realising its aspiration to achieve sustainable excellence. Explaining this logic and how it enables scoring the business approaches and results is followed by three workshops to practice the scoring process.

BE self-assessment methods and steps

Journey toward excellence starts by a BE assessment of the firm using the criteria, and then definition of points for improvement and a set of projects. This cycle should be repeated once a year to ensure a continual journey. This section describes the methods and steps in this regard, and how the firm can prepare itself for BE award competitions. This section also includes a workshop to practice the BE assessment.
