Two Commissioning Warrants for Lieutenant Thomas Forwood, 1778 and 1781, and one compact disc containing photographs of the Forwood Family in Australia.
1778-2005
Lieutenant Thomas Forwood was born on 24 August 1763 in Plymouth, Devon and died at the age of 58 in Tiverton in 1821. He was the third of four children of Lieutenant Thomas Forwood (1734-1781) and Faith Friend (1739-1827).
At 13 Thomas the younger joined the navy as midshipman, serving with his father on the Foudroyant (22 January 1777-8 August 1778). He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 8 August 1778, and 1st Lieutenant on 8 January 1781, serving on the Three Brothers (1779-1780), Ailignte (1781-1782), Cambridge (1782-1786), Standard (1787-1788) and Impregnable (1788). On 12 December 1788 he was honorably discharged on half pay following an altercation involving another officer.
Forwood married Martha Lugger in December 1791, moving from Plymouth to Southwark in London, where he established an accountancy practice. The couple had 14 children, including Dr Frederick Forwood (1808-1882), who studied medicine at St Bartholemew's Hospital, London before migrating to Adelaide in 1853, and whose papers are held in the collection of the State Library of South Australia at PRG 801.
