Abstract |
Digitised versions of UNSW Canberra Handbooks 1968 – 2017 |
Other
The Handbooks cover the first 50 years of undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered at the Faculty of Military Studies, University of New South Wales at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and then at University College, University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy (later UNSW Canberra) covering the period 1968 -2017.
The Handbooks were digitised for the 50th anniversary of UNSW Canberra celebrated in February 2018. The digitisation was a joint project between UNSW Sydney Library, UNSW Canberra Academy Library Special Collections and UNSW Sydney Records and Archives. Hard copies of the Handbooks are held in Special Collections and Records and Archives.
The University of New South Wales presence in Canberra began when Agreements were signed in July 1967 to provide UNSW undergraduate courses at the RAN College (RANC), Jervis Bay, and to create the Faculty of Military Studies (FMS) at the Royal Military College (RMC), Duntroon. The relationship between UNSW and Defence was initially intended to be short-term with hopes that Duntroon would be an autonomous degree-granting institution within ten years and possibly incorporate undergraduate teaching at the other two Service academies.
These Handbooks contain much more than the academic syllabus for UNSW courses offered in Canberra. They list the rules for undergraduate and postgraduate courses and awards. There is also information on Military and Academic staff, outlines of both organisations, military training information, more general information for students on educational qualifications, the Academy Library and other facilities, a calendar for the relevant year and information on RMC's history and in later Handbooks on ADFA, including the Agreement with Defence.
Note: From 1986-1999 the Academic and Military Syllabus were published separately. The ADFA Handbooks (not digitised) from 1986 - 1999 contain the Military Syllabus. Hard copies of the ADFA Handbook for the years 1986 to 1998 are held in Special Collections shelf location: U704.C2 and may be requested for viewing in the John Howard Reading Room.
From 2010 onwards the UNSW Canberra Handbook was published in online format only, as web pages, and is archived on the UNSW website.
1968-2017
In 1968 UNSW Canberra was known as the Faculty of Military Studies, University of New South Wales, Royal Military College, Duntroon, and in 1986 it became University College, University of New South Wales, Australian Defence Force Academy. It became UNSW Canberra in 2012. Initially it provided courses for Army cadets at Duntroon and then, in 1986 became part of the tri-service Academy teaching midshipmen and cadets from the Navy, Army and Air Force. From the start both military and civilian post graduate students were enrolled but it was not until 2016 that civilian undergraduate students were able to enter the engineering courses. When the ADFA campus opened teaching was re-located from RMC, RANC and Point Cook to ADFA.
